For the archive project we looked back at all the pictures of the discos we took – from Cocoricò, Peter Pan to Duplé Paura, Magazzini Generali, we bore witness to the best of the Italian disco scene of the 1990s.
Reviewing the whole body of images of discos after a while allows for a comparison between pictures taken in different locations, seeing the trends of the moment and finding small details and correspondences.
Have you noticed how many people are wearing Adidas? The Adidas tracksuit was a true cultural icon of the 1990s, and somehow represents a youth scene that has now completely changed.
Even their haircuts were different, like their sunglasses, they had a specific shape that has completely disappeared in recent decades.
That is the most interesting aspect of an archive, it creates different levels of reading, and what it tells us today will resonate differently in 10 or 50 years, so you can always look at it, be surprised again and again, always finding new stories and connections.
Here you can can have a look at the section related to disco.
On this subject here is an interesting digression of the Adidas tracksuit from being a uniform for athletes, to becoming a cultural icon and a staple for global youth.1
