Monopoli Sunrise

Limited edition photographs of Monopoli

Two new limited-edition photographs have just been released, following the special shooting that took place in Monopoli in September.

Every year on September 1st, a traditional ritual takes place in the ancient port of Monopoli, on Puglia’s Adriatic coast. Locals gather at dawn at Cala di Porta Vecchia for a collective bath which is believed to bring good health and good luck for the winter.

Massimo Vitali was there on top of his 5 meters-high platform to shoot this traditional event, as part of his photographic project on beaches.
The shooting symbolically kick-started Panorama Monopoli, a pop-up exhibition of the Italics group of galleries from all over Italy curated by Vincenzo de Bellis.

“I usually don’t photograph at sunset or sunrise as I am not a fan of the golden hour, but I welcomed the opportunity of this shoot with a strong curiosity. I must say that it far exceeded expectations and I am very happy with how it turned out. I am particularly pleased with Monopoli Sunrise, where water occupies the majority of the scene, and is punctuated by small bodies immersed in it. It really shows how powerful this event was: the seemingly disconnected people are part of the same large scene and water becomes the element par excellence that purifies and unifies.”
